U13 Vikings Red Game Summary
James Cappello started the game at pitcher for the Red team and struggled with the strike zone in the 1st inning walking several batters. So the Red team found themselves trailing the Grey team early. To James’ credit though, he found his stride in the 2nd inning and pitched strikes. Jack Brinkley came in relief and pitched an inning and a third, while Kotaro Horiuchi pitched the final 2 innings.
The Red team trailed the entire game, but didn’t give up. After 4 innings the score was Grey 10 - Red 8. In the top of the 5th, the Grey team chased home 5 more runs. But in the bottom half of the inning, the Vikings Red scored 7 runs of their own: Final score 15-15.
Special thanks goes to Thomas Phelps (U10) who stepped up with 4 hits for the Vikings Red team, stole some bases, and made some plays in the field. Well done Thomas!
Well done U13 Vikings!
U13 Vikings Red Game Summary
Vikings Win! Vikings Win! Vikings Win!
What a great game on Saturday for the U13 Vikings Red team. They defeated the Bears by a score of 17-8. Kurt Gosling had another good start on the mound, pitching two innings. Kotaro Horiuchi then came in relief and shutdown the Bears’ batters, even striking out the side. Kotaro also, helped the team with a 3-run homerun down the right field line. Aggressive batting, base-running and excellent play in the field by the boys. Our next game is this Wednesday at Viking Park against the Vikings Grey. Game time is 6:00 pm, so come on down and cheer on our U13 players.
COLTS WRAP UP FIRST PLACE!
Congratulations must go to the mighty colts team who wrapped up first place Saturday with a hard fought 5-2 win over the Ainslie Bears at Viking Park.
In a pitchers game that saw both teams pitchers control the game it was our boys who executed well to make the most of limited opportunities. We could only muster a grand total of 2 hits during the game both by Ryan Page ( 1 infield single and a double to left centre), while the bears did not fare much better hitting 3 singles.
Our guys scored first after Ryan led off the bottom of the first with a double, Dylan McLaughlin moved him over with a ground out to second and Ryan scored on a ground out to third by Caleb Albrecht. The top of the third saw us extend our lead to 3-0 with Ryan leading off the inning with an infield single, then stealing second.
Dylan then moved Ryan to third with a well placed sacrifice bunt. Caleb then hit a hard ground ball to third and the Bears attempted to make the play at the plate with no luck putting Caleb on first base. Caleb then moved to third with consecutive steals and scored on a ground out by Jordon Arley.
The Bears then made the game a tight one by scoring 2 runs in the top of the fourth inning by combining a walk and two base hits off our starting pitcher Caleb. The game then saw the pitchers really take over with Chris “Polly” shutting down the Bears line-up by throwing strikes and Hayden Calvert for the Bears, matching him for a couple of innings.
In the bottom of the seventh the Vikings were able to push across two insurance runs by loading the bases with two outs through two walks and a hit batter. Caleb then came up and hit a pop-up in the infield that was misplayed allowing two Vikings to score. Chris then came on to shut down the Bears in the top of the 8th inning for the victory.
The boys played well and took advantage of opportunities that were given to them but we need to do better at the plate with our team striking out 11 times in the 7 innings. Caleb and Chris did a good job on the hill keeping us in the game throwing strikes. We still have some work to do with the grand final now only about 4 weeks away, so I hope to see everyone at training on Monday evening.
Quote to sum up todays game:
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings. ~Earl Wilson
And with football season now upon us I finish off with this quote:
Baseball players are smarter than football players. How often do you see a baseball team penalized for too many men on the field? ~Jim Bouton, 1988
COLTS AT HOME THIS SATURDAY AGAINST THE BEARS
The colts boys take on the Ainslie Bears at Viking Park this Saturday. We need to extract a little bit of revenge as the Bears are the only team to have beaten us this year. I would like all the boys to be at the field by 9:30am to help Bill put up the outfield fence before we start our warm-ups.
It would be great to see as many supporters as possible as this will be our last home game for the year so invite everyone you can to come out and support the boys. A win this weekend will see us finish in first place. The game will start at approximately 1100 due to the Bears needing to get a few of their u/15s to the park after their game finishes.
Hope to see you all at the game.

Baseball Club Meeting Monday 23 Feb 09
U13 Vikings Red Game Summary
The Vikings Red team lost to Ainslie 9-6 on Saturday. Kurt Gosling pitched a gem of a game giving up only 4 runs over 4 innings. The bats came alive and there were some good hits for our team and the Vikings had a 6-4 lead going into the last inning. Well done team.
Beginning next round, the Little League teams will be split into two divisions. The Vikings Red team will play in Division 2. I’m confident that the team will be highly competitive as the boys’ skills have developed tremendously over the course of the season.
Improve your batting (it’s all in your head)
Study the batting swing of pro player Rick Ankiel notice how his eye level never changes throughout the swing. It’s important to keep your head still at one level in order to maintain focus on the approaching ball.
