COLTS WRAP UP FIRST PLACE!

Congratulations must go to the mighty colts team who wrapped up first place Saturday with a hard fought 5-2 win over the Ainslie Bears at Viking Park.

In a pitchers game that saw both teams pitchers control the game it was our boys who executed well to make the most of limited opportunities. We could only muster a grand total of 2 hits during the game both by Ryan Page ( 1 infield single and a double to left centre), while the bears did not fare much better hitting 3 singles.

Our guys scored first after Ryan led off the bottom of the first with a double, Dylan McLaughlin moved him over with a ground out to second and Ryan scored on a ground out to third by Caleb Albrecht. The top of the third saw us extend our lead to 3-0 with Ryan leading off the inning with an infield single, then stealing second.

Dylan then moved Ryan to third with a well placed sacrifice bunt. Caleb then hit a hard ground ball to third and the Bears attempted to make the play at the plate with no luck putting Caleb on first base. Caleb then moved to third with consecutive steals and scored on a ground out by Jordon Arley.

The Bears then made the game a tight one by scoring 2 runs in the top of the fourth inning by combining a walk and two base hits off our starting pitcher Caleb. The game then saw the pitchers really take over with Chris “Polly” shutting down the Bears line-up by throwing strikes and Hayden Calvert for the Bears, matching him for a couple of innings.

In the bottom of the seventh the Vikings were able to push across two insurance runs by loading the bases with two outs through two walks and a hit batter. Caleb then came up and hit a pop-up in the infield that was misplayed allowing two Vikings to score. Chris then came on to shut down the Bears in the top of the 8th inning for the victory.

The boys played well and took advantage of opportunities that were given to them but we need to do better at the plate with our team striking out 11 times in the 7 innings. Caleb and Chris did a good job on the hill keeping us in the game throwing strikes. We still have some work to do with the grand final now only about 4 weeks away, so I hope to see everyone at training on Monday evening.

Quote to sum up todays game:

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.  ~Earl Wilson

And with football season now upon us I finish off with this quote:

Baseball players are smarter than football players.  How often do you see a baseball team penalized for too many men on the field?  ~Jim Bouton, 1988

COLTS GET HOME IN A CLOSE ONE 2-1

The mighty colts team got back into the winning circle in a very close game against the Eagles side. In a game dominated by good pitching from both sides as well as solid defence, the Vikings young guns came out on top 2-1 after 7 innings of play. Our pitching staff performed well with Caleb Albrecht, Jordon Arley, James Burdin and Dylan McLaughlin shutting down the potent Eagles offense and our bats doing just enough to win the game. The stars of the game with the bat were young David Hunt who laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt (his second of the season) moving runners up to third and second one of whom scored on a ball hit by Dan Eagan. Caleb picked up two hits and scored our first run on a double by Jordon. The boys also played very well in the field committing only one error in the game. We also made some heads up plays catching a few Eagles runners on the bases in tight situations. Ryan Page made the play of the game running down a hard hit ball in left centre for a great catch stopping any rally by the opposition. We still have some work to do on our game and will continue to do so at our Monday training sessions. The boys will also need to strap on their thinking hats when it comes to picking up our signs while on the base paths and in the batters box!

The coaching staff are organising a golf day for the team on the 22 of December and I hope that as many as possible can attend even if you have never played before. Looks like a nine hole mini tournament and should be a great day for all that can make it. I will be handing out flyers at the next game explaining the day.

Our last game before the break will be next Saturday at Viking park against the Ainslie Bears, so it would be great to see as many as possible come out and cheer the boys on.

Heading into the final round before the Christmas break here is another instalment of one of my favourite baseball quotes.

There are three things in my life which I really love:  God, my family, and baseball.  The only problem - once baseball season starts, I change the order around a bit.  ~Al Gallagher, 1971

Colts game for 06 Dec at new venue

The mighty colts team will be taking on the Eagles at a new venue this weekend. To ensure a proper start time takes place we have agreed to play our colts game at the Ainslie Bears field instead of the scheduled venue of the Eagles ground. Game time remains the same so I ask that all players are dressed ready to go at 0930 for our pre-game warm ups.

So come on down and cheer the boys back into the winners circle.

See you all at the ball field.

VIKINGS COLTS WIN A CLOSE ONE AGAINST AN IMPROVED EAGLES SQUAD 5-4

The Vikings colts knew they were in a game from the beginning with both teams starting their young guns on the mound. Jordon Arley took to the ‘bump’ and pitched the first inning for us and he was helped out by some good plays in the field.

James Burdin started his first game this year behind the plate and did a stellar job throwing out one would be Eagles base stealer. James then took to the pitchers mound and ripped through the Eagles lineup throwing a strong 3 innings and keeping the Vikings in the game.

Next hurler for the mighty colts was Dylan McLaughlin who finished the game throwing a solid 3 innings picking up the win for the day. Our line-up batted well with a number of very hard hit balls going straight to the outfielders, but this did not slow our team down and everyone kept swinging the bats.

I believe that is was our defense that won the game for us by playing solid all day long with no errors across the seven innings. Chris “Polly” got in behind the plate and threw out two runners attempting to steal second. David Hunt made a good play at second and also contributed at the plate with a perfect sacrifice bunt.

The hero of the day was Jordon Arley who got the game winning hit with a single to right field scoring James from third with two out in the last inning.

It was a good game of baseball by both teams which was evident by completing seven innings of baseball in less than 2 hours. We played very well in the field and our pitchers kept us in the game the whole time. It was great to see Oliver Riley back with the team after some time away recovering and I look forward to Ollie getting back into the swing of things.

We have changed our training schedule a little to the following: Monday and Wednesday 4:45- 6:45ish, this is to allow a little more time for parents to get away from  work and get the boys to the field. No training Fridays either as at the end of the week it seems we all need a break prior to the game on Saturday. This Saturday 22 Nov we play the Ainslie Bears at their home, I ask that everyone be at the Bears field ready to warm-up by 9:15.

Burdin and McLachlan Terrorise the Bears in the Vikings 11-5 Win at Viking Park

Chalk up another win for the mighty Vikings colts side, knocking off their cross town rival the Ainslie Bears. It was a real team effort where everyone who got onto the field contributed one way or another.

The mound men for the game did a great job especially young Jordon Arley pitching for the first time on the big field. Jordon threw strikes and let his defence do their job behind him.

Dylan McLaughlin took to the hill behind Jordy and also did a good job throwing strikes in his first outing of the season. Young Dylan also drove in 3 Vikings and is showing a hidden talent for driving in baserunners in scoring positions.

Another one of our young players Jake Gaynor made a couple of good catches in right field stopping any scoring opportunities that the Bears were mounting. And yet another one of our young players also completed a first - getting his first hit in colts, that being Akil Rollings who ripped one between short and third for a base hit.

The ‘old’ heads on our team colts also did their job at the plate, in the field and on the hill. It seems that no one can get ‘old JB’ (James Burdin) out these days with James almost hitting for the cycle going 3 for 3 and only missing a home run for the cycle.

Chris “polly” got in behind the plate for the first time and did an outstanding job. I have no doubt we will be seeing Chris donning the catchers gear again in the near future. Caleb looks like our closer in the making, coming in and shutting down the Bears looking very sharp in the final inning striking out 2 batters.

We are improving with each outing and it’s great to see the team coming together as one and playing the game with passion while having a good time as well. If we keep up the good work at our training sessions the sky is the limit. Once again I’ll wrap up with another favourite baseball quote of mine. (Which there are hundreds of by the way)

“If I were playing third base and my mother were rounding third with the run that was going to beat us, I’d trip her. Oh, I’d pick her up and brush her off and say, ‘Sorry, Mom,’ but nobody beats me.”
